No Promises Have Been Made

‘…where she could find solace and a peaceful life.”

To keep her from the witness stand, she chose to flee
To Chateaugay Lake, where she could be free
From the State’s subpoena, and the trial’s strife
Where she could find solace and a peaceful life.

But the State was determined to have her appear
To keep Thaw on the grill for two days, so it was clear
That they would not relent, and would not let her go
So she had to prepare for the trial’s show.

Though she had gone to Chateaugay to avoid the trial’s fate
The State was determined, and would not abate
So she had to prepare for the witness stand’s call
And face the State’s wrath, and the trial’s fall.

Jack Clifford said she would not testify
But the State was determined, and would not let her be
So she had to prepare for the trial’s call
And face the State’s wrath, and the witness stand’s fall.

Though she had gone to Chateaugay to keep her from the stand
The State was determined, and would not rescind
So she had to prepare for the trial’s show
And face the State’s wrath, and the witness stand’s woe.

O’er Thaw’s past, the State’s attorneys seek to delve,
To prove his mind is broken, and unwell;
They’ll ask of him his motives, and his life,
And why he carried gun that fateful night.
They’ll question him on matters of his wife,
And all the details of his past life;
The jury and the Justice must be shown
That Thaw is mad, and must be sent back home.

The grueling questions, if the court allows,
Will surely show the traits of paranoia;
The State’s attorneys, in their search for truth,
Will make an even more searching inquiry.
Two days, at least, they’ll take up in this quest,
To prove that Thaw is not of soundest mind;
And if they can, his fate will be decided,
And justice will be served, of that we find.

Though still the Attorney General’s office seeks
To find the moving pictures of Thaw,
The counsel’s hope of evidence grows weak
For many features of the case they lack.

“A number of things we’d like to get,”
Deputy Attorney General Becker said,
“But they seem to be missing,” and yet
The search for Mrs. Thaw goes on instead.

In Plattsburgh, N.Y., they search for her,
But no definite promise has been made.
Another bit of evidence is missing,
The jeweled whip with which Thaw was said
To have whipped girls he lured to his flat,
But Mrs. Merrill, too, is among the missing.
The whip played an important part
in past Habeas corpus proceedings, and that’s that.
