The Malevolent Presence in the Shatagee Woods

In the summer of 1955, a group of college students from Cortland University embarked on a hiking trip in the Shatagee Woods area of the northern Adirondacks. The outing club was a mix of farm girls, city slickers, and outdoors enthusiasts with varied backgrounds.

The group set out on the first day with high spirits, eager to explore the beautiful wilderness. However, as the days went on, strange occurrences began to happen. Footprints would appear in the ground, only to change shape and form as they were studied closer. Shadows would move independently of any visible source, and the group felt as though they were being watched.

The group soon realized that they were being stalked by a malevolent presence that seemed to be both human and otherworldly. The creatures revealed themselves slowly over time, taking on the form of familiar animals, or shape-shifting to mimic human form.

However, even the forest itself seemed to come alive, manipulating their senses and playing on their deepest fears. The students’ relationships with each other became strained as their sanity was tested, and they began to turn on one another.

One night, as they sat around the campfire, the group heard a strange noise in the distance. It was like nothing they had ever heard before, a cacophony of screams and wails that echoed through the woods. As they tried to discern the source of the noise, they realized that it was coming from all around them.

Their mental states deteriorated further as they continued to encounter the creatures. Some of the students began to see things that weren’t there, while others lost all sense of time and space. The group’s leader, a sophisticated city girl named Margaret, seemed to be the only one holding onto her sanity.

One afternoon, they came across a clearing in the woods, where a lone figure stood in the center. It was human-like in form, but its skin was the color of ash, and its eyes glowed with an otherworldly light.

Margaret approached the figure, and it spoke to her in a voice that was both familiar and terrifying. It revealed that it had been watching them for days, and that it had the power to manipulate their minds and emotions. It offered to spare their lives if they would submit to its will.

Margaret stood frozen, staring into the creature’s glowing eyes. It seemed to know her deepest fears and desires, and she felt its power coursing through her mind. The other students looked on, their faces twisted in terror.

Suddenly, a loud snap echoed through the clearing. Margaret’s eyes darted to the side, where she saw one of the students, a farm girl named Marion, standing with a broken branch in her hand. She looked determined, her eyes focused on the creature.

“What are you doing, Marion?” Margaret asked, her voice trembling.

“I can’t let it take us,” Marion said, her voice low and firm. “We have to fight.”

The creature seemed amused by Marion’s defiance. It let out a deep, guttural laugh that echoed through the clearing. “You think you can fight me?” it said, its voice echoing in their minds. “I am more powerful than you can imagine.”

Marion took a step forward, brandishing the broken branch like a weapon. The other students looked at her with a mix of fear and admiration.

“Come on, Margaret,” Marion said, her voice strong. “We can’t just give up.”

Margaret looked at the creature, then at the other students. She knew that Marion was right. They had to fight. She nodded slowly and took a step forward.

The creature roared, and the clearing erupted into chaos. The students fought with all their strength, using whatever weapons they could find – broken branches, rocks, even their own fists. The creature seemed to multiply, creating copies of itself that attacked from all sides.

Marion swung the branch, striking one of the creatures in the head. It let out a high-pitched scream and dissolved into a pile of ash. Margaret fought off two of the creatures with a rock, smashing their skulls in.

As the fight raged on, the students’ mental states continued to deteriorate. They heard voices in their heads, saw things that weren’t there, and felt their emotions spiraling out of control.

At one point, Margaret thought she saw her deceased father walking towards her, beckoning her to follow him. She felt a wave of grief and longing wash over her, and she almost gave in.

But then she saw Marion, still fighting, her face twisted in determination. Margaret knew that they had to keep fighting, no matter what.

The fight seemed to go on for hours, though it was probably only a few minutes. Finally, the last of the creatures fell, dissolving into ash. The clearing fell silent, except for the heavy breathing of the students.

Margaret looked around, taking in the scene. The clearing was littered with the remains of the creatures, and the ground was stained with blood. The other students looked exhausted, but relieved.

“Is it over?” one of them asked, her voice shaking.

Margaret looked at the sky, which was starting to lighten with the dawn. “I don’t know,” she said. “But for now, we have to keep moving.”

The group packed up their gear and started walking, unsure of where they were going. They stumbled through the woods, their bodies and minds exhausted. Every sound seemed to echo through the trees, and they jumped at every shadow.

After what felt like hours, they stumbled upon a small cabin. It was old and dilapidated, but it offered some shelter. They entered cautiously, scanning the room for any signs of danger.

Inside, they found a journal. It was written in a language that none of them recognized, but the drawings inside were disturbing. They showed creatures that looked like the ones they had just fought, along with strange symbols and incantations.

As they read through the journal, they began to piece together what had happened. The cabin had been the home of a reclusive occultist, who had been performing dark rituals in the woods for years. The creatures they had encountered were the result of these rituals – beings from another realm that had been summoned to this world.

The students felt a sense of dread as they read through the journal. They knew that they were in way over their heads. But they also knew that they had to keep going. They couldn’t let these creatures continue to roam free.

As they settled into the cabin, they began to plan their next move. They knew that they had to find the source of the creatures and stop it. But they also knew that they were dealing with something beyond their understanding.

They spent the day preparing, gathering supplies and weapons. They searched the cabin for anything that might help them, and they found a few items of interest. A small statue of an unknown deity, a book of ancient spells, and a map of the woods that marked a location as “the gate.”

They studied the map, trying to make sense of it. They noticed that the location marked as “the gate” was near a nearby lake, Chateaugay Lake. It was a long trek through the woods, but they knew that they had to go there.

As they made their way through the woods, they noticed that the creatures had returned. They were watching them from the trees, their glowing eyes following their every move.

The students tried to ignore them, focusing on their goal. But it was difficult. Every rustle in the leaves made their hearts race, every shadow seemed to hold a new threat.

As they approached Chateaugay Lake, they saw a strange structure on a ridge. It was made of stone, and it was covered in strange symbols. They approached it cautiously, trying to make sense of it.

As they got closer, they noticed that there was something inside the structure. It was a portal, a gateway to another realm. The students felt their minds being pulled towards it, drawn by its strange energy.

They knew that they had to destroy it. They set to work, using the weapons and spells they had gathered to break the portal. But it was difficult – the portal seemed to resist their every effort, and the creatures continued to attack them.

But they persevered. They fought with all their strength, knowing that they had to succeed. And finally, with a loud crack, the portal shattered.

The creatures let out a terrible shriek, and then they were gone. The woods fell silent, and the students looked around in awe. They had done it – they had stopped the creatures.

As they made their way back to civilization, the students felt a sense of accomplishment. They had faced something beyond their understanding, something that could have destroyed them. But they had survived.

But there was also a sense of unease. They knew that there were other things out there, other beings that lurked beyond their understanding. And they knew that they might encounter them again.

The students parted ways, returning to their lives with a newfound appreciation for the darkness that lurked in the shadows. And they knew that they would never forget the horrors they had faced in the Shatagee Woods and Chateaugay Lake area of the northern Adirondacks.
